It is a switch for the light. It is so a person changing the bulb can turn off the fixture. It is a safety provision listed in the NEC code that isn't supposed to be 2008.

does it have anything on it- like numbers or anything?? or is it just like a piece of plastic that goes in and out?? if it's the first one, it's to switch to set the temperature of your fridge, if it's the second it turns the light on and off in the fridge, when the door presses against it it turns the light off when the door opens the switch pops out then it turns the light on. hope that helps !?!?!

There is only one switch in the refrigerator door, all others are knobs. The one you are referring to is to let you know the fridge door is open. If that wasn’t the case it would counteract the heating in the kitchen, and the whole room/house would be freezing come the morning.
My mate said it was a time machine but I never believed that. Would you?

If its the switch that is operated by opening and closing the door, then its the interior light switch. Cant think what else it could be.

It is more than likely the humidity level, condensation, that can sometimes be seen on the door seal when opening the fridge or freezer section.

It might be a "fast cool" switch that will keep the motor running if you put a lot of stuff in it at once. Freezers have them to keep the temperature down of you've just put something at room temperature in there that you want to freeze.
