The other day my car started to loose power on the freeway(as it has so many times before) I pulled over a few times and restarted it..Soon after I smelled somthing burning and when I opened the hood, oil was leaking from the air breather onto the exaust manifold and had caught on fire. After further inspection I realized that oil was also in the air filter houseing as well as all over the filter. The car is able to start and run. Any Ideas Please let me know.

More than likely, there is either a permanent mechanical problem inside your engine or there is a problem with your pcv (emissions) system.

It's best to have a certified / licensed professional determine the source, because it is either relatively minor or very major.

Certain vehicles were prone to oil in the air intake system. Having the PCV checked and replaced, as well as making sure all other lines are secure is normally a good place to start. Change the air filter, and wipe down the air filter box and as much of the intake as you can to get rid of the oil. In certain cases, like 4.0 liter Jeep Cherokees, there was a TSB (technical service bulletin) about that oil trouble, and the dealerships were instructed to take steps to correct certain issues that lead up to that oil problem. For now, change your filter and PCV like I suggested. If you dont have oil, then you should be ok. If you continue to have oil troubles, take the vehicle to your dealership or reliable garage to have it inspected.

This is what is called 'blow by.' Changing out the PCV will help this out. Change the filter as well. I assume this is a higher mileage vehicle. You might want to pull the intake and clean all of the carbon out of the valley. Better gas/performance will be a result.

If you are losing power while driving, it may be the catalytic conver plugged up. I had a car that did that, and it was the converter...it did cause oil blowby too
