I'm thinking about getting an external hard drive and put all my music and photos on it (if I have enough room) and then use system recovery and do a clean install of windows xp. Is this a good idea? Also would that speed my computer up so then I wouldn't have all of my files on my internal hard drive.

Love the external hard drives, hate the idea of reformatting and starting back from scratch though. My site below under Computer Talk has a section devoted to Optimizing Your Systems Performance which I highly recommend before doing anything drastic. Hope this helps

external hard drives are nice to have but if your just moving your photos and mucsic to it, it wont really speed it up just by doing that. Why, because they are not running in the backlground until you open them. Uninstalling software you dont use, and programs that start up when the operating system starts will speed up the computer. Also before you do a clean sweep, try the defrag in the start menu under programs, accessories, and system tools. this will speed up your hard drive. Also uninstall any unused software.

Internal / external makes no diff. you can add a second internal up to 750 gb. just make sure that your present hard drive is unplugged when you boot up to install windows on the new one. later you can plug in the old drive.

Watch your master/slave settings on the drives jumpers and select the new drive as the boot drive on your bios settings.

External hard drives are great. And yes, a less cluttered main hard drive would benefit your operating system.

You have to consider your budget also. CD is the cheapest and reliable form of backup. External hard drive is very convenient but may crash also. However, we definitely need backup for our important files

An external is good, but I have found a 2nd internal is much faster and cheaper and better.
