There are a number of ways to improve your mental alertness, some of which are already sited, such as exercise and good sources of lean protein. To address your specific question about supplements, though, I recommend a good multi-vitamin, anti-oxidants such as Vitamin C, pycnogenol, and Vitamin E. Ginko biloba is commonly recommended and for memory improvement the B vitamins play an important role, especially choline and B6.
One of the most important approaches for improving mental alertness is by being proactive. A nutritionally deficient diet may cause poor memory and concentration. What is a nutritionally deficient diet...one that is high in processed foods, junk foods and fried foods.
If you're troubled by memory loss be sure to have your helathcare professional check for other medical conditions such as hormone imbalances, certain glandular disorders, and allergies to certain foods.

I am pretty experienced with supplements and herbs. Recently I began using a very inexpensive supplement called DMAE. There is a lot of info on the net about it. My experience the first time I took it was that I felt more alert and motivated within an hour. Coffee will make me alert, too, but not nearly as motivated. I take it daily, building dosage gradually. After 6 weeks it seems to be building up and doesn't wear off as fast, I'm sleeping better and at more normal hours and get up ready to go.
Not for people who are bipolar or have seizures, no badd incidents reported. This was used for ADD before Ritalin came along... DMAE was too cheap to be profitable.

I hear that green tea and ginkgo biloba are good for that. My sister's been drinking the green tea-flavored iced tea for a while and she takes a ginkgo biloba supplement and she's doing okay...but then she takes a multivitamin every day too. I think they help, as long as you're taking a multivitamin too.
You might want to check with a doctor before you take the ginkgo, just to make sure it's safe for you. Green tea is easy, just buy a 6-pack of it at the store....but double check with a doctor on the ginkgo biloba. :)

Korean Ginseng works good for me. It's called Panax Ginseng (only Korean). I use GNC's brand called Ginsa Gold, 600 mg (standardized).
Try it, you are gonna like it. It's not expensive: 100 caps about $13. Make sure to get it without caffeine. The label is brown color.
Good luck!!

eat protein
Protein increases alertness and helps give you more energy. Protein has an amino acid called tyrosine, which increases dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine levels. Norepinephrine and dopamine are responsible for alertness and excitement. Low levels of norepinephrine and dopamine may make one feel anxious.
