This really depends on a person's lifestyle... When I lived in Japan, I worked the night shift so I didn't do much going out until the weekends. Here's an average breakdown of my living expenses- Oh, also take into account that the Yen to Dollar rate fluctuates, so the actual expenditures varied a little.
Month's Rent- $1450 for a 4LDK house (approx 1,000 sq.ft 3 bedroom house).
Utilities- $150 (up to $300 during the summer for A/C)
Food- $300-$400 for a 2 adult 1 child household
Dining out- $200-$300
Cable internet- $28
Extra Parking for 2nd car- $50
Cell Phone- $70-$100 (didn't need a land line for 7 years!)
Entertainment- Varies but $200-$500 depending on what we did and where we went.
Bottom line- Japan is expensive compared to where I live now, but I made a lot more money in Japan, wish I still had that job damn cancer...

There are lots of average figures, but those aren't what you seem to want. Living costs for a single person, probably living cheap, rather than on a corporate salary.
I am a grad student in Osaka, Japan and have to live cheap.
rent 38000/month (this is LOW, most newcomers will be paying about 60000/month in company arranged housing)
food 20000/month
utilities+phone 15000/month
health ins+taxes 45000/month (ouch)
bare bones total is about 115000/month which is about $1000US
This doesn't include expenses for clothes, furniture, transportation, alcohol, or any entertainment. Most foreigners in Japan teach English, take home about $1600/month after rent. Most can save $500US per month.
People who like to party or travel a lot live paycheck to paycheck.

I can give you personal info if that helps.
This is on a monthly basis.
I used about 65000 yen for rent in Tokyo.
Small apartment but close to the station and probably 20 minutes away from the heart of the city.
60000 for food. Including dining out.
35000 for utilities including cell phone bill.
20000 for transportation. (trains / buses)
30000 for spending money (Clothes / CDs / others)
About 50000 for health ins / taxes
This is not bad. probably just about average for a 24-26 year old.
For the USD equivalent just use below website.
