the nightlight in my kids' bedroom is shining more brightly than it did before. It's bright enough to read by now! It's a standard 7.5W bulb (240V AC) plugged into a powerboard which is plugged into the wall. I did nothing but just one night it was shining more brightly.

Its probably on its way out. Many things glow more brightly before they expire. Just get a new one, assuming the bulb is not replaceable.
