At first Chiang's forces appeared to have the upper hand, but in late 1948 and early 1949 they suffered a series of crippling defeats. In the summer of 1949 the KMT resistance collapsed, and in October Communist leader Mao Zedong proclaimed a new People's Republic of China (PRC). Chiang, along with the remaining KMT forces, retreated to the island of Taiwan.
