Lets look at the definition to be sure.

steal (stl)

v.tr.
1. To take (the property of another) without right or permission.
2. To get or effect surreptitiously or artfully: steal a kiss; stole the ball from an opponent.
3. To move, carry, or place surreptitiously.
4. To draw attention unexpectedly in (an entertainment), especially by being the outstanding performer: The magician's assistant stole the show with her comic antics.
5. Baseball To advance safely to (another base) during the delivery of a pitch, without the aid of a base hit, walk, passed ball, or wild pitch.
v.intr.
1. To commit theft.
2. To move, happen, or elapse stealthily or unobtrusively.
3. Baseball To steal a base.
n.
1. The act of stealing.
2. Slang A bargain.
3. Baseball A stolen base.

It's not really "stealing" b/c it's not their "property" yet (they currently do not own it)--- but it would be more polite to ask them where they found said item. So I doubt they could legally call the law on you-- however, if they beat the tar out of you, I think you'd deserve it. Best of luck in your adventures!

That is so funny - I've done that (kindof). I was at Trader Joe's and I needed Raspberries for my daughters birthday. I sent someone in the back to see if they had anymore left because the section where they were was empty. The girl came back and said they were all gone. I walked back to where they should've been and there was a cart there with raspberries and some other stuff in it. I looked around and no one was walking back to the cart. I walked around the store - thinking if when I got back and no one moved that cart I would take them. Well, when I got back to the cart they were still there and the cart didn't move - so I took them and paid for them (quickly) and rushed out of the store. Is it stealing??? Maybe in a sense but you probably wouldn't get prosecuted for it. By the way, before I took the raspberries, they were sitting in the cart that didn't move for about 15 minutes. But I still cannot believe I did that.

it isn't really stealing but that would suck for the other person cause they would be like..............where did i put that and then they would have to go and find it again.
