The art in question is music and I've been recording and playing it for over 10 years. Yet, getting people to come to shows or even show the slightest bit of interest gets harder and harder as the years go by. Maybe I'm not very good. I don't know. I think I'm pretty good. One would think after 10 years you'd get to be fairly proficient at your craft. Still, after all this time, the indifference shown to me hits my like a brick in the face after each show and after each release. It's really hard to do something time and time again with no appreciation. Music makes me happy, but it also makes me very sad. The whole "you should just be happy with it because you're doing what you love" mentality only works for a while. I'm passed that. That's not good enough. That's like having your mother tell you're a handsome man. It's not the same as validation from your peers. Should I just quit?

Have you tried 'myspace' or 'youtube'? Lilly Allen in the UK has now become a successful, very well known singer/songwriter by promoting herself via myspace on the net. You have a much wider audience to listen your music & leave comments on the net. However, you do need a thick skin to let a lot of crappy & unhelpful comments wash over you!
I'd only give it up if it makes you unhappy.

No, do not quit. If what you are doing is not working out to your satifaction try adjusting it. Are you playing in bars? Try churches instead. Churches are always looking for good musicians and they are a GREAT way to network. You never know who will be there. Have you tried festivals? What about working/teaching/performing for children. You may have to adjust your repetoire temporarily but just try it. It may work out. Ask for honest imput from friends. Music is an awesome thing, don't quit.

Well, you should either try a different approach or quit trying to do it for the money. You should never quit what you love, you apparently enjoy music, just don't do it for a living.

if it is your passion, then never quit.

do you advertise you shows? via flyers, myspace, purevolume, etc? consider that. also, by havings your recordings on myspace, its a great way for people to find out about you and become a fan.

do you play shows with other artists/bands? maybe you should to help bring a larger crowd. teaming up with other artist/bands, along with advertising could help.

Is your goal your art or is it validation.

One is a need based on insecurity.

The other would just be something that was fun relaxing and enjoyable as and end in its
self.

Trying to hard can spoil anything.

whatever happened to...It's great to get paid for something you really looooove doing?...Why would you give up on that and get paid for doing something you really did not like at all and in doing so, it becomes a chore and boring?....Are you not...appreciating you own ability in your unique creativity?....I can NEVER think of a time when my own music I created..depressed me...geez, I am proud of what I have done whether appreciated by others or not !!...It is mine and unique to me !!...I think you probably need time off to reassess a new direction with your music like most famous performers eventually do...good luck either way...

If money and screaming fans are your only motivation for making music, then yes, quit.

Remember what Curly said in the movie ( can't remember name , but Billy Crystal was also in it) . ONE THING.
Focus, persevere, live it, make it happen.

As Winston Churchhill said Never, ever ever ever ever ever give up.

no, can we listen to some?
There are plenty of unknown artists, I wouldn't quit.
But try not to depend on this, you can't expect everyone to think you are a famous singer, that's their opinion, right?
Do you have a band myspace?
