Working with the Coast Guard would be a job I'd really like (out on the water, not the admin side). The thing is, I've only ever seen anyone refer to the US Coast Guard- do we in the UK have an equivalent?

The HM CoastGuard is active up and down both coasts of England,in fact right around the country.

Yes. They're called the Maritime and Coast Guard Agency.

Yes. The Coastguard service is alive and well in the UK. They patrol the coast and protect shipping. They organise searches for ships in distress.
