Actually, in my town 90% of shops open on a Sunday. Yet in the next door town they all shut...they even shut half day on Wednesday. How old-fashioned is that?

These kind of things fall under the blue laws. There are many of these blue laws.

As I understand it and I could be wrong (my disclaimer) the church complained that by having stores open on Sunday it will undermined the christian way of life. Sunday is supposed to be the rest day according to christians. Other religions have other days. The Jews use saturaday and some other christians argue that Saturday is the correct day. The U.S. is mostly Christian so sunday is the default day.

The smaller the town or the more the town is rooted in some religiois beleivef then the more thiese blue laws are observed. The opposite is also true. In bigger towns the all mighty god of the green backs rule so some stores are open 24/7. It all depends on how much money they can make by staying open. In Puerto RIco they have similar laws. Its funny that if you go to a pharmacy like walgreens there are certain items that fall under the blue law. You cannot buy these items on Sunday unless there is a national emergency like a hurricane. What exactly determines what items fall under the rule is a mystery.

There are other blue laws besides the not opening on sunday. Not all of them are based on religion. Not all of them are based on any type of sense except some lawmakers will. When you research blue laws take a look at them with a grain of salt. There might be more to it besides the small description you will read.

Religious day . Remember the bible said something about the 7th day was made a day of rest . Sorry i am not religious so don't know the full meaning behind it .However I was told in Sunday school that's why we rest on a Sunday.

I still remember in the 70;s at Christmas time having days and days were the shops didn't open .

Many of the earliest Americans were religious.
So, this was reflected in laws they enacted.
Since Sunday is a holy day for religious people, shops and business were forbidden to open.
These laws became known as 'blue laws'
Today, more and more of these laws are being repealed throughout the country.

Some people now and many people long ago observed Sunday as a day to honor God and rest as it is commanded in the Bible. I think most people now just see it as a day of rest to prepare for the work week.

So that when my family has talked me into cooking (and I hate cooking) I can realise at 4:05 that I'm missing a vital ingredient after being already half way through the recipe! The kids go "Haha!" and are having a great time, my husband is quite glad that he has an excuse to order a take-away instead & I'll ask myself again if I'll ever be organised... ;)

I ask the same question to myself....I like to go shopping on Sundays. Since I don't go to church, the stores are practically empty.
