I am a die hard redsox fan. I have grown up watching the redsox and being a fan. I feel that the whole buckner thing should be dropped. He made a mistake, but he didnt cause the redsox to lose the next game. People think that he directly caused them to lose but he didnt, what they don't realize is that they could have stepped up and won the series with a win the next day. THAT is what caused the redsox to lose.

This question was already answered 17 years ago. Buckner has already received cheers from the Boston faithful.

Bill Buckner returned to the Red Sox later in his career and was cheered for his fine career. He closed his career as a member of the Red Sox in 1990 after signing as a free agent.

Who better to tell you about this than a Red Sox fan? HE WOULD GET AN OVATION. Possibly a long one. People in Fenway feel bad and I've never talked to a sox fan who hates buckner despite going to many Red Sox games and living in Red Sox dominated New Hampshire.

I think he should be cheered... in fact what allot of people forget was he was cheered when he returned to finish his career in 1990. If it wasn't for Buckner, the Sox might now have made the playoffs in 1986.

I think there might be a mix the older fans probably would be cheering because they remember more about him and what he did. I think the younger fans would be booing because they only remember him for that bad play in made in the World Series.

I am not a Sox fan, but could not agree with Luvmysox more. If here in Philly Mitch Williams can find forgiveness, than Billy should as well. Besides, most of the boos and threats are saved for T.O. now.....

I believe he would get a standing ovation. Enough is enough. If it wasn't for his contributions they wouldn't have been there. The real goat was Rich Gedman who failed to catch the pitch from Stanley that was ruled a wild pitch.
As for the Boston fans being fickle I have seen many players come through this town and get ovations from a knowledgeable fan base regardless of which team they played for.

The Boston Fans only remember that Buckner blew that play. They forget what a great fielder he was and that his bat wasn't bad either. He would get booed. The Boston fans are as fickle as the Yankee fans. Its what have you done for us today.

I'm not a Bostonian, but I would think any knowledgable fan would cheer him, especially now that Boston finally "broke the curse." But I think he is probably still upset not so much about his error, but by the way he was treated by Boston fans, so I don't think he will be coming back any time soon.
