My computer is really slow when it resumes from Stand By. I've run several scans with Norton and Windows Defender and found no spy ware. Could one reason be that it runs so slow when I resume the computer from stand by be Norton updating itself? Every time I get on it, it says that my virus protection has been updated. Does it really update that frequently? If you recommend and software make sure it's FREE.

Does you're computer boot up slowly too when you first turn it on, or is it only when coming out of stand-by? If it's both, check how much memory your computer has. Adding more could possibly speed it up if there are any available sockets open for more RAM.

If you have quite a bit of memory already, anywhere from 512MB to 1GB, then that shouldn't be much of the problem. It could very well be Norton causing the problem when coming out of stand-by. If it says it's updating itself or has updated itself EVERY time you resume from stand-by, something doesn't sound right there. Norton doesn'tupdate that often. Maybe once or twice a week at most it will do some sort of urgent important update on it's own for me. Otherwise I run Live Update once a week. I know Norton slows down my computer too, but only on shut down because one of the executable files stops responding in Norton (ccApp.exe) This file has been known to cause many problems for people.

It's tough to tell exactly what's slowing your system down, especially if you're not reporting virus's or spyware of any kind. Even the fact that you're not getting any error messages of any kind makes it really difficult to come up with a certain answer.

If you're using Windows XP, or any Windows product for an operating system, explain the problem to the Microsoft tech support, or send your question to the tech support of the company who manufactured your computer.

I personally use AVG and love it. You could have too many programs opened/running.

Be glad that virus protections do update often because that means it'll (hopefully) catch any new types everyday.

On most virus protection programs, you can set a time for updates/scans. I usually go for about three in the morning. I'm usually not up that late or up that early.

Good luck.

that's weird that your norton software updates that often. i had that software on my computer and it only did that once or twice a week. you should try downloading Ad-Aware. it sounds like there may be some sort of spyware or virus. windows defender is OK, but Ad-Aware is a little stronger! also, every time you download something, you should scan it to make sure it's virus/spyware free!

Backup all your data files. If your problem recently occurred, try doing a system restore to a point before this problem occurred.

Yes, Norton does update quite often. You might try deleting your temportary internet files and clean up your cookies. Having several of them on your computer will slow it down.
