it technically depends on how you gave birth and whether it went well or not. i gave birth vaginally and i only stayed two days, but my cousin had a c-section and she stayed 4 days. the average hospital time for a birth that went well either way is about 2-4 days usually. if the birth didn't go too well then it's obviously gonna be longer.

Some doctors are fine with allowing you to go home whenever you like, but insurance will cover a vaginal birth without complications for 48 hours after delivery. A Cesarean birth is usually 72 hours. I stayed for 2 days with my first, 1 with my second, and had a homebirth with my 3rd (and will continue to homebirth from now on).

I had 2 vaginal pregnancies. The first I would of only had to stay 2 days, but since I lost too much blood during labor and had low iron I had to stay 3 days. My daughter was discharged before I was. With my second, I stayed there for two days. So normally for a vaginal birth, you stay for 2 days.

Way back when I had my first two children it was 5-6 days- The new mom got to rest and make sure her breast milk was well established before she was thrown out. And problems with newborns feeding were diagnosed and mom helped to learn to care for her new babe. All the tests a newborn needed were done before they were sent home. Health insurance companies made this a thing of the past.

Now moms are booted out and generally have to take the child back to the hospital for tests several times (when she should be resting).

IMHO going home to soon is the cause in the increase in post partum depression.

sometimes you can do a short stay and actually go home the day you give birth. However, i wouldn't recomend that when my brother was born they said him and my mom were fine to go home and if my moms friend wouldn't have talked to the nurses he would have left, and died on the way home. he was then put on oxygen and was in the hospital for two weeks, then he was sent to another. so i wouldn't recomend that, there is nothing more important than you health and your babys - expecially after what you just went through and the baby!

good luck!

It all depends. For the most part they could send you home in as little as 8 hours after having the baby. you stay mostly to have all the test done to the baby. I recently had a baby and had to have a c-section and stayed 3 days. Every woman is different.

Never been pregnant, but my sister and a lot of my cousins have been. I believe the norm is about three days, unless there were complications or you had a C-section. My sister had to have an emergency C-section and ended up staying in the hospital for closer to a week (with her daughter staying in there for about three weeks because she was born a month and a half early).

With my first I stayed overnight and with my second I went home after 12 hours. I would've left sooner but the doctor wouldn't let me. If it's your first baby, you will probably have to stay for at least a day. They wanted me so stay to get some rest!!?? Between hearing the other babies on the ward crying, nurses waking me every five minutes to take blood pressure, breast feeding support group barging in, people waking me to fill in the lunch menu, visitors chattering away I've never been so exhausted in my life. It was bliss to go home and get some damn sleep lol
