whenever i plug my ipod in and try to update it it says itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close but it only does it with the ipod with itunes open its just fine i have uninstalled it and installed it a couple of times why is this

it is the latest version and i have the new ipop video 30 gig
im also using xp plz walk me through the way to fix this
is the problem with my ipod or my computer or itunes

it sounds like it's a problem with the ipod, since you said that itunes works when the ipod isn't plugged into your computer. have you reinstalled the ipod software? that might mean you have to wipe out your ipod and reinstall it. (i'm not sure). here's the itunes support website:
