Hello people, the question wasn't about the state of activity, but about the composition of the volcano. I think Lassen is a basaltic volcano, but it could be a strato-volcano. Also, since the Pacific Plate is actively being subducted under the North American Craton there is no such thing as an inactive or dormant volcano in that region. Lassen could erupt any second, just as the "dormant" Mount Saint Helens did in 1980.

Lassen is classified as a dormant volcano, at least I hope it is since I see it every day when I walk out my front door. Not to say that there isn't activity up there. Geothermal forces are still at work on the mountain, including hot springs, mud pots, steam vents, etc.. If you've never been, I suggest you go. It's a beautiful trip, very interesting and educational. You can actually hike to the top of the volcano if you're even moderately in shape. Lots of hiking trails and points of interest and of course it sits in the middle of the Lassen National Forest. As a kid, we used to go three or four times a year and never scratched the surface of what was available to see.
