RIGHT after it does backfires it cuts off, and then i have to turn the key on to keep going...usually all this happens after i take off from a red light, also can happens when i am already driving around 50 mph.

The muffler creates a small amount of back pressure when still good. If it's getting louder, the muffler needs to be replaced anyway, but it doesn't normally cause back firing.

Is it back firing alot, or just a pop every once in a while? If it's all the time, it could be that the timing chain has slipped a tooth, that will cause the engine to run rough. If you are losing power, it may be the catalytic converter getting plugged up too.

Another cause of back firing (or cross firing) is bad plug wires, bad distributor, crankshaft sensor, etc...all can cause some mis -firing.

Hope this helps you isolate the problem.

No the muffler cannot cause backfiring, but it can be broken by backfiring.
You are either not firing on one of your cylinders (could be part time ignition problem)
Or you have too rich a mixture
Or a bad injector

Can be a few things:
Cam is bad: lobes warn down
Timing belt is stretched/broken
Timing is off
Worn distributor

Does it backfire just when you accelerate? Cam
Does it backfire all the time? Timing/Timing belt/Distributor
Doest it backfire when you decelerate? blockage in the exhaust system.
Does it stay running?
Hope this helps.

typically backfire is cause for fuel not fully combusted in the chamber, sending gases thru the exhaust system. Check your plugs, get a tune up,
