If you have at least average intelligence, you shouldn't have too much trouble with a vet tech program. I'm currently enrolled in a 2 year program for that field. It would probably help you to be strong in English, Math, and science. Requirements for licensing differ by state, but there are 2, 3, and 4-year programs. After completing the program, you are generally allowed to take the state test. When you get a little older (18), you should volunteer or work in a clinic to make sure you really like the field. It is a very emotionally taxing job, and the wages aren't great. My guess is that pay rates vary from $7-15/hr, generally, depending on the state and city you live in. Larger cities will pay better.
Something like 25-50% of vet techs will not stay in the field for more than 5 years. So, it may be worth it for you to work on a BS/BA degree as well as join a vet tech program. Maybe you could take your vet tech pre-requisite courses at a university before you take on the vet tech program. I'd make sure to have something to fall back on. (I got my BS first, but I know people who became techs first, then went back for more schooling later in life.) Hope this helps.
