The teacher's role has always been an academic one. If we expect the teacher to be also the teacher of morals and expect them to deliver by themselves then we would be sorley disappointed. When the family unit , the core unit of society is decaying and disintergrating, we expect the schools and teachers to hold the fort and be the lighthouse. Is it fair ? If teachers and schools are to be the standard bearer then I think the criteria to be a teacher has to be reviewed. And for that matter, the parents role has to be seriously reviewed too. The society has no more standard for truth anymore. To each his own. If the giverment is a goverment for the people by the people, than the people have to stand out and not cop out by pushing it to the teachers. If tthere is a standard bearer, the church must be the one that stand up and lead the parade, as a responsible representative of God and Morality. The church must stand up. The people must return to Truth and Morality. And return that mandate to the schools !!

That is not the whole story. Some parents are totally uninvolved in their child's education. Others do things like pull their kid out of school for a week or more for "vacation". Some try to get the highest grade for their kid while the kid is doing the least amount of work. Not all parents are like that though. Most of the parents of the kids I have are very supportive.
Parents need to teach their children delayed gratification--work first, play later. They also need to teach them the value of earning what they get, instead of just handing $350 game systems to them.

Today's teacher face a major task of teaching our youth who do not want to learn anything because they think they already know everything, and, parents don't give a hoot anymore, so now teachers must be a parent also. They are also very underpaid for the job that teachers do.

john b - you said it perfectly. I work in a middle school. We are stuck disciplining your child because you don't do it at home. These kids are a disruption in the class, etc.
