the state was named after him as the most prominent resident, but not as founder since others lived there before him.

most experts agree that William Penn was the founder of the Province of Pennsylvania. as for your reference to trees, this probably comes from a reference to the then heavily forested countryside there.

Pennsylvania means "Land of Penn". Not sure about the trees, though
