What day (M T W Th F S Su) does your school usually schedule band concerts? What time of the day are they usually scheduled?

My son's new band teacher (just out of college 22 or 23) has scheduled a concert for 2pm on a Sunday. Is this inconsiderate of people's time? It's smack dab in the middle of the day, making it very innconvienent to plan a family outting for the day.

I will actually be surveying people as they arrive, asking them if this time/day is convienent for them have them sign their name and circle yes or no. This will give me the information that if other parents really enjoy it and I am the minority, that I should simply comply. If other parents don't like it either I will turn the sheet over to the principal for nessasary schedule changes for future concerts.

actually, I would prefer that! Ours is usually at 7:30 p.m. midweek and the kids have to be there at 6:30. We get home from work/school, get dinner cooked, eaten and cleanup, homework, etc. get cleaned up with the right band clothes...you know the drill. We are all already a bit tired.

Now since we only have two or three a school year, I think a Sunday afternoon is great - everyone is fresh and ready to enjoy it. I know everyone's different, but I think our family would actually enjoy this time frame.

Maybe you could speak to your band director after this first concert get feedback from other parents on how this new time works. If it's not working for other families, I am sure he will hear about it.

That really IS unusual. I could see if it were a private church school, maybe, so that everyone is around on Sunday anyway. But if it's a public or even an all-inclusive private school, band concerts as I recall are usually scheduled for a weekday night. Thursday stands out in my memory. I think they need a night when everyone is likely to be around (Friday/Saturday people want to go out & party etc). It's toward the end of the week so that even though kids are staying up late to do it, the work load isn't usually too huge on Friday so they can go back to school tired and it won't make that much of a difference.

I guess you and some other parents are going to have to ask this teacher why he chose Sunday; then let him and maybe his department chair know that you don't consider it the best choice.

Good luck!

I've never heard of Sunday concerts for a school band. Tuesday and Thursday were always the most common, at 7 or 7:30 PM.

Sunday at 2pm is the norm here (Southeastern Indiana) for band and choir concerts. Most people are home on Sunday and it's after church and lunch. And concerts have been held on Sunday since I was in band.

usually all my concerts/rehearsals were during the week like around 6 or 7 and if any were on the weekend it was only on Sat at like 10 or 11 in the am.

Usually schools would hold these types of things on a standard weekday (even if that weekday was a Friday, though that would be unusual). Tues/Wed/Thurs would be the most common days.

Suck it up and put your kid first. You wanted him in band, he is, now attend the concert.
