For one thing, there was the traety of Versaiilles in WWI. it had weakened Germany so much, that Germans were ticked off at the countries that had done it to them. Natrually, when Hitler promised revenge, it was pretty easy for him to gain power. next, he began to rearm Germany and then annx, or add, countries to Germany. The allies, afraid of another war as bad as WWI, did nothing to stop him. This policy was called aapeasement and basically told Germany, Italy, and Japan they could do what they wanted and not pay a price. The axis powers became very agressive, with japan Invading the chinese province of Manchuria and italy invading Ethiopia. But the war didn't begin until Hitler invaded Poland. From there, a chain of alliances drew many countires into the war. The U.S. tried to stay out of it, but the attack on pearl Harbor on Dec.7,1941 forced them to declare war on Japan.
