Linux is and open source operating system that allows you to use the web, play games and do everything you do with windows but faster and more reliable. So reliable that it does not require a firewall since is so secured. It looks better than windows and hosts features that windows is only now adapting them in the new vista os. Best of all, its free and no, its not the poor version of unix as stated on the first answer. Linux is often used as os for many palm devices and to host webservers, e-mail servers, file server, remote storage devices, and its powerfull enough to be used in datacenters.

The only difference is that its not so user friendly as microsoft OSs are. You will need to be a little tech savvy in order to use it because it is very different than windows. But with a little time you'll get used to it.

There are many flavors of Unix, if you are going to install one. I strongly recommend Ubuntu or Kubuntu to start. These flavors come very well supported and you can find a lot of help online when trying to install something or do something on it.

It is a very powerfull OSs and very reliable and overall, way faster than Windows.

Linux is an open source, freeware operating system. In some of its forms it looks similar to Windows. It is a poor man's version of Unix which is a commercial operating system. Most portions of Linux are copyrighted but the copyright is freely distributable and modifiable by the public but it may not be re-copyrighted and sold for profit (this is commonly referred to as copy-left).
