A Microsoft Word file. You should be able to open a file of this type with any normal text editor though. Right click > Open with > Wordpad/Text Pad

.doc format is widely different from program to program. It is the extension that most word processors save their files with (most notably Microsoft Word).. but ANY program can save data in a file with .doc extension...

Normally, .doc files are word processor files.. or documents rather than sounds, pictures, video, etc.
