Now they are doing away with the term and female "actresses" are supposed to be called actors as well as male actors.

They probably differentiate because back then, women weren't doctors or drivers, so there was no need to call them anything different.

it was a semi-formal callin...but if one were to indicate their occupation one should say actor even if they are female.......or the person who created the dictionary needed some new words for it
