It depends on your situation, your personality and what you're looking for.
If you're in an apartment you need to forget about a large dog. If you're in a house, but aren't physically active, then don't get a high energy dog. If you have small children, you need to make sure you get a dog who is patient and tolerant.
Generally, if you have the space and dont' mind the hair, a Golden Retriever is a wonderful dog. They are NORMALLY patient, tolerant and just love to be loved. Now, if you don't want to give them lots of love and attention, don't get one. They get very anxious and unhappy when ignored. Frankly, I think most Goldens would rather be hit than ignored.
However, with ANY dog, most of how it turns out is dependent on how it's raised. Whatever you get, take some dog training. Not the type where you jerk the dog around and scream to get it to mind, but where you learn about what makes a dog tick and earn it's love and respect.

I would recommend an Alaskan Malamute or a Siberian Husky. Both breeds are extremely gentle and are good with children. They are smart playful and very affectionate. I wouldn't reccommend a smaller breed of dog to some one who has children because smaller breeds tend to be neurotic and may bite.

Do you really need a specific breed or are you just looking for a loving dog? I have a pure bred Mini Doxie, and as truly special as she is, we "inherited" her (as a puppy) from my hubbys grandmother when she passed away....I could never spend hundreds or thousands of $$ buying a pet from a breeder, when I know so many need good homes.
Personally, I would head down to your local SPCA or Animal Shelter and she what wonderful dogs are available that would fit well into your current family and living situation. Good luck to you!

French Mastiff cause they sleep like 14, 15 hours a day. That's easy maintenance right there. But there big so its good to make sure you got a house instead of an apartment

I would reccomend a bichon fris'e because they don't shed so they can be indside and they are energetic, but can be trained. They are also very kind and have the sweetest look on their faces. Their barks are a little high pitched though.:) I will tell you that they can be a little $$$$$$. if you know what i mean.

A South African Boerboel. They are gigantic fierce looking dogs that are extremely protective of owners and property. African tribes use them to protect cattle and other livestock from predators. That's "African predators". Nuts dogs. I put a link below...check em out.

shi tzu. The are loyal, cute, cheap to feed amd you don't need to walk em lots, providing they have a backyard.
The downside is they need regular grooming and clipping to maintain a good coat.
I have one and it's the best breed I have ever had

husky. cute adorable, they love to be played with...you cannot ignore them. they are loving, but I have heard they can be hairy. Normally for people who have lots of time, and generally in cold places. Chihuahas are cute if you like taco bell lolls.....
