There is a terrific new book out that does just this! Very readable too. The beautiful cigar girl : Edgar Allan Poe, Mary Rogers, and the invention of murder / by Daniel Stashower

He discusses the murder, the tabloid sensation, Poe and how he crafted a story around it, and how it impacted the police force, the tabs, and the mystery story. There are some online sources-- the crime library is one-- but this book has much more depth.
