I had to recover the o/s and my original files were kept in a folder called 'my old disc structure'. Some files are ok but one comes up with 'access denied' so I can't open it. Is there a way of recovering it?

First, boot your computer up in safe mood. Find the location of the files that you can't get access to, right click the folders and click "Properties". When the folder properties appear, you should see a tab that says "Security"(you will only see it in safe mode). You should see a list of users who can access this folder. You will not be in this list, I will more then likely have to take the "Owner Permission". To do this, click the button labeled "Advanced", then click on the "Owner" tab. Choose your user from the list click the checkbox below and click "Apply", then go back to the "Permissions" tab and add any users that you want to be able to access this folder and choose what permissions you want them to have. When you click "Add..." if you want to find a list of all the users, click "Advanced" and "Find Now"...or you can type in the usernames. After you add all the users, you can remove the old usernames with random number-letter combinations (they are your old accounts). Next click on the "Replace permission entries..." checkbox (this should allow you access to the files an folders within this folder. Click "OK" and click "OK" again...and the permissions should change. While you are still in safemode, see if you can access these files...if you have any problems with it...just play around...you can always get your permissions back!

To recover all types of deleted files you can download Wondershare Data Recovery -> http://bitly.com/1uUrEN8

Any time that a file is deleted on a hard drive, it is not erased. Instead, the information that points to the location of the file on the hard drive is erased. This pointer, along with other pointers for every folder and file on the hard drive, is saved in a section near the beginning of the hard drive and is used by the operating system to compile the directory tree structure. By erasing the pointer file, the actual file becomes invisible to the operating system. Eventually, the hard drive will write new data over the area where the old file is located. The data recovery utilities search for data on the hard drive that does not have corresponding pointer information and present you with a list of these files. Your chances of fully recovering a file diminish the longer you wait after you deleted the file since the probability that the file has been overwritten increases.
