At 6 months of age. This is what I teach my ECE students in Health Safety and Nutrition. Ask your pediatrician for the best time, as all babies will differ. You are the mom and know your baby best.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies be exclusively breastfed until 6 months of age. This means no formula or solids, including rice cereal. Of course, it is common knowledge that many women do not breastfeed for six months...so you should offer breastmilk or formula only until six months and then gradually offer more options at 6 months if the baby shows signs of readiness.
You should offer one new food every four to five days in order to check for allergies. If your family has a history of food allergies, you should stay away from all highly allergenic foods (eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, and berries) until the recommended ages for each food.
Breastmilk or formula should be the primary source of nutrition until 12 months of age, at which point, it is ok to wean to whole cows' milk or goats' milk if you want. Of course, it is perfectly acceptable to continue breastfeeding for as long as you and the baby desire, as well (16 months and going strong here!). :)

I gave my daughter 'tastes' when she was ready at 5-6 mths. My ped wanted her to have more cereal (1 tsp daily) at 6mths, but I wanted breastmilk to be her main source tl 12 mths like researching showed is best. At 6-7 mths we went through 'tasting 1-2 tsp of all the vegs & fruits. Now at 8 mths she eats a little cereal around 11 w/ fresh pureed mango or applesauce and sometimes a veg&fruit or a green&sweet veg at night. The rest is breast milk. She is growing like a weed, happy, and healthy. (btw my husband makes her food now and freezes it in the used jars. Much healthier and FULL of taste. Follow a good baby food book since some foods are not good until a certain age and there are special steps you can't skip to make it safe to eat!! (how long to boil, etc)
If you are breastfeeding, don't supplement with formula, water, or cereal since this will cause your baby to miss feedings and that WILL lower your milk supply. You can introduce foods to taste, but these are 1-2 tsp and are not meals.

When they show interest.. A baby will look at you eat, reach for stuff to put in their mouths... start off with one veggie.. then add one new food about every 2-3 days.. mine have been 4-6 months...
And I have never had an alergy problem from starting them at that age and I dont have picky eaters either

Honesty, it's all according to your baby. The textbook answer is 6 months, but some babies just don't get full around 4 months. They say that the earlier you feed solids the more likely they are going to be obese in childhood. We strted feeding my son at 4 months (rice cereal in his formula) and he is a stick today. He was just not feeling full and the rice cereal helped. Plus, it helped him start sleeping thru the night.
Honestly, it's up to you when the solids start, but just look for the signs that they are not filling up on your breastmilk or formula.
Good Luck!!

At 6 months, expect things to be a bit messy when baby is fed.
introduce only one new food every week to see if your baby is allergic to certain food. Allow baby to sit with the family at meal time to begin to enjoy sharing a meal with the family.

the recommended age is 6 months but you can start from 4 months onwards.
at the end of the day it's up to your comfort level as well as your baby.

When they're ready. There is no magical age.
If your child is drinking bottle after bottle and still acting hungry, it's time for some cereal! Both of my children were on cereal long before they were 6 months!
You'll know when it's time! And the fact that your asking makes me think it's time!
