or is it to do with the sort of vibrations it sends through the body when in contact with it...
or is it just the quality of the sound?

I think it's all of the above, but mainly the quality of sound/vibrations. The english horn surprisingly can have the same effect (if you've heard the solo in Mr. Holland's Opus)

Never heard that rumor. You can attribute the same qualities, really to every musical instrument, because sound is primal.

Usually because I dont know what a Cello looks like but surely Passion and Eroticism is always on everyones mind.

Not the Cello in personal experience but i should imagine that it is the posture that is the main reason.

The combination of tight jeans and standing in front of bass amps at a rock concert has some interesting effects.
