There are really so many variables that it is almost impossible to answer this question. My advice is to take what is your monthly expenses in the US for food, entertainment, travel, etc and then expect to spend as much in pounds for those things in the UK as you do in dollars in the US. A $1 Coke in the US is a £1 Coke in the UK. A $9 movie in the US is a £9 movie in the UK. A $30 shirt in the US can be £30 in the UK. $1500 a month in the US=£1500 a month in the UK, etc. Of course, when you do the conversion you see it is quite a bit more expensive over there.

This isn't a perfect comparison, as it doesn't always match up, but it is a good way to get a general idea.

Now housing a whole different ball of wax. Your best bet is to check some of the local realtors and a newspaper call "the Loot" to get an idea of what things cost in the neighborhood you are looking at. http://www.loot.com/
