A competent computer repair shop can suggest RAM for you, but can sometimes be a little expensive in cost for that installation. However, if you are not comfortable with electronics, that would be a better way to go than to muck something up yourself. The other answerer has a good idea. Go to the Compaq/HP site, find support options, and track down the RAM type you need there and what the laptop is capable of using. Then, using that information on type and speed of RAM, you can browse Kingston, which has some very competitively priced goods. I have used Kingston in the past, and was pleased with thier shipping and overall service.
Good luck.
PS> Researching your RAM may bring some new terms to you, just take some time to study the info and it can be understood. Things like ddr... scdram....pc2700... all those terms and more can affect what you actually need, so writing down some notes is probably a good idea! Good luck.
