We drove to Spain a couple of years ago with my 3 boys aged 6, 7 and 11 and I was dreading the journey. We stopped off for a night in France but it did take us almost 2 days to get there! We got through it by having a dvd player, that was invaluable! We bought a couple of new kids movies that they hadn't seen before so they wouldn't get bored having seen their old ones before. It kept them quiet for a couple of hours and then we'd have a toilet stop and stretch our legs. We also took their gameboys, colouring books and puzzle books. We had those fold up scooters that don't take up much room and they played with these at toilet breaks and were fantastic for them once we got to our destination. It wasn't as bad as I'd imagined and I'd definately do it again!
I hope this helps and good luck!!!!

P.S In answer to the flyboss, not all gameboy games are violent and as for sticking your children in front of a tv, its far more safe to have them doing that than bickering and arguing through boredom potentially distracting the driver and causing accidents!!

Don't do, what my friend's dad did when he took us on a long drive! He told us to watch the little red light on the dashboard and tell him if it went off, because it would be serious if it did!! We were glued to it all the way home!! So cruel!

Get your 6 yr. old to do tally charts of how many different colour cars are seen on the way. Halfway through the journey bring out a new little toy eg. colouring pencils and new colouring book.
Stop frequently to break up the journey. A head set with own favourite music on, that has been chosen by your child before you go.

I'd go at night so that they sleep for the journey but if that's not an option then how about a portable dvd player and their favourite dvd? I know it's not ideal to just stick them in front of the tv but a couple of epsiodes of their favourite tv programme won't hurt.

Crayons, paper and books (I bought a travel tray from Blooming Marvellous that goes over their legs and gives them a table/storage pockets for their things). Also snacks and juice cartons will help them kill some time, as will games of I-Spy, pub cricket, counting certain colour cars etc.

My grandchildren aged 12,9,and 6 love their mp3 players. They each choose their favourite music to put on it. I think it depends if your child gets car sick what other stuff you provide for them. If they don't then things like books (reading and colouring) and games will all help to make the journey pleasant. You could make up several packages filled with crayons, books, sweeties, drinks, small toys and such to give out throughout the journey. Playing games like I spy may also help. DVD player are great but you might not want to spend that sort of money although you will be able to use it at other times. Have a nice trip

I go with Flyboss11, to which I would add: sing songs. The songs your -year-old knows, and get everyone involved. Might be a good time to teach him/her a few new ones too. For example, "who killed c0ck robin", "10 in the bed", "10 green bottles", and so on. Happy driving!

PS: One or two DVDs mightn't be a bad idea but not for 600 miles...

Why not let the 6 year old drive, judging from some of the imbeciles witnessed upon our roads, I'm sure your 'Offspring' will be more than capable.

if possible how about breaking the journey up into 2 trips and stay overnight at a cheap hotel or travelodge.

that way you'd have 2 shorter car trips and not so much time in the car in one go.

just an idea!!
