i belive there is quite a lot of night life inCairo clubs and so forth, but i dont have much knowledge about it.
However i know quite a bit about luxor. I am assuming you are after places to go for dancing etc.
Basically there are 3 simple alternatives there are discos.
these are usually frequented by young egyptian males and some tourists. the discos go in and out of fashion with the locals and so some are more popular than others. the etap hotel is probably the most popular at the moment thats on the corniche up past the museum. there are also discos in the sheraton hotel ( not very popular as its too expensive for locals) and the Sinhoue restaurant and coffee shop. last time i went there it was dead but the coffee shop is a great place to sit and watch the world go by. The tut hotel also has a small club.
Then there are the outisde egyptian style coffee shops there is one called habib near the bridge a big open air place quite nice. another on the same road but not as far called thebes. and not as big. and dozens all round the streets of luxor but not so salubrius. Finally there are all the bars in the hotels themsleves these vary according to the hotel clientele but the bars in the Sonesta sheraton and sofitel karnak all have live entertainment usually singers, probably others do too, and the meridian used to but it changed hands recently so not sure now
but the piece de resisitance has to be the golden palace and if you are game for a laugh do not miss this place. it is on tv street and all the locals know it. There is an open air bar/coffee shop on the roof about 8 floors up the view is wonderful but the lift terrifies me. but down in the celllar is an honest to goodness dive with bellydancersand locals getting all excited about them. It is hilarious and well worth a visit but nothing gets going in luxor til about 10 or 11 and i dont think the cellar starts til after midnight, but it is worth a visit. if you got the courage.
you will also find the locals everywhere very friendly, sometimes a little too friendly (hold on to your walllet) if you offer a drink you will be expected to pay for all. and you may be asked to a wedding or a locals house.( a small present of chocolate or cake is noramal if you visit) its a little overwhelming at first but just relax and enjoy it. If you are on cruise entertainment is provided every night on the boat.
have fun

I am not familiar with Luxor, but i know that most of the good hotels there will have decent bars and clubs.
As for Cairo, there is ALOT to do there at night, whether it is dining or dancing. Like Luxor, most hotels have their own bars/clubs. The Nile Hilton has a good club, i think it's called Latex.
Other good night life places include Aubergine in Zamalek and Cairo Jazz Club in Mohandeseen (my personal favorite). Hotels such as the Semiramis Intercontinental, Marriot (in Zamalek) and The Conrad also have nice clubs that one can go to, though i would still recommend either Aubergine or Cairo Jazz Club. The Hard Rock Cafe in the Hyatt hotel is also a nice place to dance the night away.
Cairo is a huge city, so there are millions of things to do. Nightlife usually gets started pretty late, not before 11pm or midnight.
Some of the best night life places in Egypt though are in the Red Sea area, in places like Sharm el Sheikh and Hurghada.
I hope this helps.

Cairo is capital, like every other country always the capital big , hug, crowded, many many people, many many cars, so at night in Cairo you can find nightclubs, cafe shops, cinemas, dream park, sound and light show at pyramids, dinner on board,
Luxor is smaller compare with cairo, it can be start quite around midnight, special in winter time, the city have many hotels around, many cafeshops, many resturant, sound and light show at karnak temple, some bars and disco.
that is all what i can get in my mind right now, if you need more info u can contact back any time.

Cairo could be the capital of Egypt and one of the largest towns in Africa and the Middle East and a great place to go to; discover more with hotelbye . On the Nile water, Cairo is fabled for its history, preserved in the wonderful medieval Islamic city and Coptic sites in Old Cairo. The Egyptian Museum in the center of community is a must see, with its countless Ancient Egyptian artefacts because no visit to Cairo would be total with out a visit to the Giza Pyramids, and to the regional Saqqara Pyramid Complex. In Cairo you can see: The Pyramid of Cheops (also named the Great Pyramid or Pyramid of Khufu), the biggest pyramid of the Giza group, and its inside of narrow articles may be investigated, though there isn't significantly to see, except an ordinary tomb chamber having an empty sarcophagus. Directly behind the Great Pyramid could be the Solar Vessel Museum, which displays among the ceremonial solar barques uncovered in the region that's been painstakingly repaired to its original glory. More south on the plateau is the Pyramid of Chephren (also called the Pyramid of Khefre), which has an internal tunnel region that can be entered.
