I got an M.Ed. in School Counseling in May 2005 but have not practiced as a counselor or applied for licensure (since the school you work in usually takes care of that for you.) I'm thinking of trying to get a school counseling position for Fall 2007. Will my not having worked as a counselor (or gotten the license yet) be a problem from a legal/certification standpoint? I'm in Virginia, btw.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I DID do lots of counseling as part of the program. (K-12 only) I just meant that I have not actually worked in a paid position as a counselor yet.

I have never known of a school to take care of lincensure for you - but they normally will direct you as to what you need to do in their state to get a teacher's lincense. Even though you haven't used the lincense immediately it shouldn't be a problem, however I would suggest you familarize yourself with the requirements for teacher licensure in your state which you can learn at this website which if for public viewing by the State of Virginia's Department of Education http://www.pen.k12.va.us/VDOE/newvdoe/teached.html

Good Luck!!!

Not sure, look at their local rules. You didn't do counselling as part of the Masters programm? You didn't get to counsel college undergraduates, for example! I'm suprised! Colleges usually LOVE to get slave labor from post graduates who are paying to go there to do work they'd normally have to pay a professional to do!
