like instead of saying ''firemen'' they want to change it to ''firefighters'', or ''mankind'' to ''humankind'', then, since feminists claim to be about equality between the genders, shouldn't they change their name to ''equalists''?

In case you can't see the connection: feminist=feminine=female.
What if a guy was a feminist, eh?

What do you think? and why?

@ Yay me: a guy can be a feminist. Of course it's not that big a deal, but why do feminists make it that big a deal then? Equalist was just an example. Would it hurt you to say another word then feminist?

For the same reason feminists aren't offended when news casters refer to an "unknown gunman" despite the fact that the sex of the shooter is not known; they only care about things they perceive as being damaging to women, and they certainly don't care about men in the least.

The word pertains to the pursuit of equal rights for WOMEN, thus "fem" inist. I don't think there's such a thing as a group of people that aren't prejudiced against in some manner, but this word is specific to the female sex.

I'm definitely a feminist, but that doesn't mean I don't get upset when men's rights are infringed upon, though I don't think it's as big an issue for men. As a mother, I do get peeved when so much of parenting type books, products, magazines, etc.. is obviously biased towards women. I got a great little book as a baby shower gift recently, but didn't like that it was called "The Little Big Book for Moms". Yes.. feminists care about OTHER forms of inequality too. : )

Main Entry: fem·i·nism

Function: noun
Date: 1895
1 : the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes
2 : organized activity on behalf of women's rights and interests

How would a guy be feminist? I think that those terms probably are more fair to everyone. Equalist is a weird word. I think that they should just stick with that name. Some feminists are overboard, true but really, would it hurt you to say firefighters instead of firemen? Seriously, its not that big of a deal.

That is a good question...I'm a little bit of a "feminist'' (lol, "equalist") when it comes to certain things myself. Although, I don't get upset about EVERY little thing that is not equal in society between women and men, so the word "feminist" doesn't bother me as much as other things do.

saying someone is a feminist does not mean they are a woman. the definition of the word does not limit feminism to females. in fact, there are plenty of men that are feminist. check out a dictionary sometime.

From the responses that you have received my dear i think the women in america have matured to a higher level of resposible empowerment of women.
However we are a long way off before the fairer sex decides they have got what they wanted and get along with the concept of garden of eden with adam and eve.
I wish the women in my country India were that mature i must say i envy you.

I think that if the focus is on the structure of the name the actual problem is probable being over looked.

that's a valid point , but i think that they don't fight for men that are suffering under women just women under men so they are not really equalists because they don't help men and women equally.
