Is he really in your fireplace? So you are looking him in the eyes right now? Be care full, Squirrels are evil. They are bent on world domination. (Apparently one fireplace at a time). They enlist the unwitting pigeon to do their dirty work. Are there pigeons roosting on your roof?
O.K. He is probably in your chimney, not your fireplace. If so close the damper so he can not enter the house. Seal the fireplace opening with plastic sheeting, and masking tape. Climb on the roof, and drop a smoke bomb down the chimney. He will come out on his own. Be sure to install a metal screen over the top of your chimney to prevent him from returning.
Remember..You are not a squirrel. You can, and probably will fall off of the roof. Make sure your health, and life policies are paid up before attempting this stunt: Or you could hire someone else to take the fall for you.

You could try preparing a wet clay bed large enough to encapsulate the said squirrel and prepare a large pot that you can set on the fiercest ring on ur hob, with fresh vegetables cut small enough for the said squirrel so that it is not dwarfed by the flavoursome aromas given off by the added bouquet garni added to the pot. Then very carefully tease said squirrel into the wet clay and while under the impression that u r trying to help it encapsulate said grey squirrel into the wet clay and making sure that it is 100% covered and then b4 it knows what u r doing put it in the said cooking pot and put heavy lid on the pan and bring it up to full heat when fully cooked and no chance of transferring bird flu, remove clay and it should take all the fur and outerskin off leaving the succulent flesh ready for eating

Oh sorry you did say without killing it lol suppose cooking might kill it.
Remember that squirrels are vermine and as such cannot be resued and returned to the wild. See DEFRA terms and conditions.

I was just reading about someone who had to deal with this (the editor of "Down East" magazine - check out the March issue!). He eventually climbed on the roof and put a string down the chimney to tempt the squirrel out. DO NOT light a fire!!! You will have squirrel for dinner! The string worked. I would call an exterminator just to be sure.

You might need professional help, but first, try putting a radio in the fireplace, and see if that spooks him into climbing out by himself. If he can't get out because he can't climb up, you can try going up on the roof, and lower a thick rope down the chimney. This will enable the squirrel to climb out because it can get it's claws into it. You might need to leave it there overnight. After it's out, get a good chimney cap.

Maybe you could put some peanuts on the roof and more on the ground. If you can catch him eating the peanuts you can close the vent so he won't return. Maybe there is a squirrel repellant you could spray into the chimney.
