Same reason people hate skinny and fat people.
Same reason people hate tall and short people.
Same reason people hate mentally retarded.
Same reason people hate other races.
Same reason people hate the crippled.
Same reason people hate the elderly.
Same reason people hate children.
Hatred is in their heart, the lungs expel the hatred and it passes through the teeth and lips. Otherwise the heart would explode.
What the mouth speaks the heart thinks.

Too many people are ignorant and narrow-minded. Anyone who is not exactly like them will come into their firing line. I'd bet that those same people that laugh and make rude jokes about your gay friends would also be there making jokes about suicide bombers and towel-heads if you happened to be out with friends of a middle-eastern appearance.
Gay people have always existed in society and always will exist in society...and unfortunately...so will the idiots that make fun and have prejudices.
The world is a diverse and imperfect place!

I think it is good to have these view point, you seem very tolerant. I don't really know what the reason is, but I believe it is fear. Not that they think gays are gonna kick their butt, just fear of the unknown. People in my experience tend to fear what they don't understand and since most people are christian and the bible says it wrong (though I have never read that anywhere) it's like they feel it is their duty to punish or JUDGE others. If you are not with the group you are against and some folks use that as ammunition!

I, too, have friends who are homosexuals. But as with all sin, there is something wrong with it. The Bible speaks very clearly on homosexuality as a sin. We are all sinners and I am called on to love the sinner, hate the sin. People who hate homosexuals often are so uncomfortable with what they see as acts against nature; they are tired of having the gay agenda forced upon them at every turn; they are repulsed by the public displays of affection and they wish all the gays had stayed in the closet. And once again, yes there is something wrong with homosexuality. It's a choice; a very poor choice. And it's a sin.

The reality is that most people don't hate gay people, they just feel uncomfortable around them or uncomfortable with the subject. So I guess it's easier to just makes jokes, etc...
Like everything else, once you get to know the person, then it doesn't matter if their gay, straight or alien......

They hate them because they want to. I do not agree with the thought that all homophobes are closet homosexuals. That is silly. But they hate because they have hate inside of them. They have anger and personal problems and they want to be able to exercise those thoughts, and being able to find a group of people to get them out on works well for them.
It is a state of sadness that causes the hate. I feel sorry for them.

People should not make fun of them, because they already have many problems. I don't have any gay friends and i wouldn't like to, but they seem nice. Some of them.

Some people are so hateful, that this is all they know. There is no room for love, compassion, understanding, or anything else.

American s are tolerant and appreciate poeple of all sorts.
Gay poeple have some quirks , and we are not yet required to think that folk are born that way.
We are called to love and accept all, not to agree . There is a difference
