Is it safe to use public hotspots if you're doing financial stuff online?

No. Absolutely not. When you are in an airport, that is the least safe. Crooks hang around with their notebooks and send out a signal to get you to go there. Then, while you surf, they steal your personal data, infect your machine and other things that will ruin your life. Stay in some spot you know, like Starbucks. Even then, KNOW the name of the server to which you want to connect.
