Only 2 kinds made intel and AMD intel is a commonly known name and AMD is rarely ever heard but trust me AMD is the best for your dollar. They also use different benchmarks for testing the speed so dont think an INTEL 2.7GHz is faster than an AMD 2.2GHz . AMD will soon be top of the market

History of Intel:
William Shockley was one of the inventors of Transistors. He then setup Intel company which manufactured jst memory devices. then once it was given an order to manufacture calculator, whichit found tough. This problem was solved by Fernando Faggin. And then Intel started manufacturing processors. The 1st one was a 4-bit processor - Intel 4000. Then came the ENIAC (Intel4004), the 1st single-chip processor. Then came the further processors.
Faggin then left Intel and started his own company - Zilog. He made Z80 and further processors.
But till now Intel was well developed and settled in market. Now also many other companies are there. But Intel is popular.

intel has always had the market on them. they produce more than anyone, thus you see more of the chips in alot of cheaper computers. this is slowly declining as AMD is getting more popular and besides having their own processors, they also build their own mothrboards to go with them. AMD's are more trust worthy than intel also.
