To me it means one is living a life of lie. When one "sold its soul", one does not need to take the responsibility of his/her actions. Therefore one can easily blame his/her actions on others.

It means one is not living an authentic life.

the simple answer is that you have sacrificed your personal principles / beliefs for gain or gone against what you really want to satisfy a shallower wish........ not necessarily material gain, but gain nonetheless
