I have a small heater that burns butane and was wondering if using propane cylinders will work.I will be using the heater at temps of 30 to -10 degrees F.?

Assuming that the ports can be adjusted you should have no problem. The different fuel will require a different O2 mix. You may also require a different regulator.
At ten below, I would not be surprised if any regulator froze up. Be sure to wrap the hoses, tanks, and regulator in some kind of insulation. Placing near the heater is not a good idea.

I can't answer your question directly, but I do know that with gas kitchens stoves, when moving from a place with natural gas to a place with propane (or vice-versa) you have to change the orifice which regulates the flow of the gas. So, I would be careful about using fuel other than what it is supposed to burn. Hope that helps. Peace to you.
