I'm working as a teacher and as the years pass I'm finding that childrens names are getting more and more obscure. I'm getting to the stage where I have to ask the kids how to pronounce their names, due to no phonetic rules applying to the random mix of letters that their parents choose. So, why do people do this?

Right you are. And names can be very career limiting. A checkout clerk at the local grocery is a mid-40 year old woman named Baby. That may have been cute at 3 months, but she was never going to make the boardroom.

Good one! U get a STAR!

Honestly, I really think it has to do with a power high that parents get; basically....like the "knowing" that they have the power and freedom to NAME A SOUL!~ It might be a stretch, but perhaps it's a possibility?

My four are simple....
EMILY
ISAAC
DIEGO
NATHANYAEL

Nate and Isaac both have Latin~type variations;
Isaac James Danyael
Nathanyael Zion

I actually think that my husband and I were totally in love with the movie: "The Prophesy" (Christopher Walken!) and the whole idea of angelic script, that those deviations from the "normal" spelling were really interesting for us. I think they look cool, but then again~ Im partial!!!!~~~LOL

I too, have had compassion and the same thought for teachers. As I walked my Kindergartener down the hall on her first day, I peered along each locker cubby area and was like "O MY, how on earth can they even be pronounced!"

Good Luck teacher!~
God Bless you and the children you oversee as well!~
^7^

Because they hate their children!!

I love names that are original and all, but names like precious and Rain just kill it, and sometimes then when someones name is so complicated to pronounce, and then they get offended if you get it wrong! I agree with the guy in the England rugby shirt- the parents are twats! I hate it parents called there children Britney and Kylie etc... I feel so sorry for the kids!

t when choosing names for kids people are influenced by 2 factors. 1 a need to be original and to stand out from every one else that's why most celebrity 's choose these obscure names like tallulagh belle' imagine bein saddled with that 2 some people like to name their kids after celebrity's in short it doesnt matter cause names come and go in fashion

I use to hate strange names while growing up.

I use to think that these names were retarded when I first heard them in the early 70's as a kid. I mean I thought they were stupid to say the least.
Melody, Melanie, Jenny, and Steffie.

Now, I say bring on the strange names. We'll get use to them eventually and really like them.

In general parents want their children to be unique. When i was at school in my class there were 3 Emmas 2 Nicolas and 2 Sams, how confusing, at least if they are called something different theres no chance of them being mistaken for someone else.

Heres a few that i know
Star
Storm
Danya
Denaby
Saffron
Eden
Kai
Madison

Just afew... but i'm sure there are many more!

My given name ("John") was so common that it was considered rude to use it out loud at parties, because it would apply to half the males in the room.
I agree that one prefers that names be correctly constructed so that they can be deciphered from written form. It is a PITA to have to correct the pronunciation of one's name throughout life, both for the holder of the name and for those who are continually being corrected.
Obscure and odd names (so long as they are not unintentionally funny - like naming your daughter Feemahley or your son Wrek-Taal) is not a bad thing. Originality is to be applauded. A bunch of Slades and Shaminas and Banjos is a lot easier to take than rooms full of Johns and Jaquelines.

I guess they're thinking they're being unique when choosing their names, but I totally agree with what you're saying. Seems like you can't even pronounce their names much less spell them. Their kids will probably find it inconvienant when they get older too. I'm sure they're going to want people to be able to say and spell their name correctly. Take care.
