I've just finished reading Pelé's autobiography (Simon & Schuster).. it was such an interesting read & surprisingly very well written.
I also enjoy Wilbur Smith... a fantastic story teller with most of his novels based in Africa. He does his research well & very often I find myself reading well into the wee hours of the morning.. or wake up with the book on my face & bedside light still on with sunlight streaming thru the window :-))

As far as the hiking/walking books, your Dad probably already has the books I'm thinking about: Bill Bryson has several travel books that involve him walking or hiking around. The most notable one I can think of is A Walk in the Woods about Bryson's attempt to hike the Appalachian trail. A very enjoyable read.

If your dad likes Dan Brown, then you need go no further than Angels and Demons by Dan Brown. He also has another one called Deception Point.
The best book I have ever read is The Watchers by Dean Koontz. To say it is fantastic doesn't really do it justice. It is about two animals which have escaped from an experimental lab, one good and one bad.
The good one is a Labrador retriever and the interaction between dog and the man who finds him is heart warming and hilarious. Despite the humour, this book has a very serious side, and once started you will find any interruptions maddening.
This book is a marvellous read and even if you don't buy it for your dad, I would advise you read it yourself.

Yeah Bill Bryson is a good idea! Also if he liked the Da Vinci Code, what about some other of Dan Brown's books?
