Assuming you know to lift the lever under the top of the gearstick to move the selector over to reverse. Then yes likely your friend is right. If it is that you really need to let a mechanic look at it.

no doubt you have not study the car user guide that comes with the car and find out what is what as every model will have something different as modifications improve over the years,vauxhall do fit as standard a collar under the gear stick knob that has to be lifted every time you require reverse gear,as for 1st gear that could be a problem in the gear box i will not get techinical as it seems that all you know is how to put petrol in the car.
