G'day,

There are 2 main CPU chip manufacturers in the world, which is Intel and AMD.

Intel is the one producing Celeron, Pentium and Centrino
AMD is the one producing Duron and Athlon

AMD has the reputation of having a cheaper CPU than Intel. However it needs better air circulation since the heat generated are much more than Intel's. U can usually see that it has a much larger CPU heatsink than Intel.
There are also some claims that some softwares do not work very well in AMD machines due to the fact that the software was created using Intel's CPU.

My recommendations is usually to use Intel if you want to use the machines for business purposes. For home use, you may want to consider AMD only if you are on a very tight budget.

The first answerer mentioned that he has been using AMD for 8 years without problems, it is true with proper care and hardware maintenance. However most users may not have the time nor the skill to do that.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

First of all, I don't know where Jonathon got his info, but the AMD processors blew away Intel a long time ago and intel is just now catching up with their high end processor that is a dual core. The ghz ratings for the single core Intel are very misleading. even though they were a full ghz faster than that of an AMD cpu, because of hyper threading and dual core technology, AMD was actually a lot faster and had and still has a larger bus with up to 2000 ghz front side bus while Intel is only now introducing a cpu with up to 1000 ghz. That is an extremely big difference. AMD is more reliable and also more powerful, especially when it comes to gaming and graphics. The new quad core Intel is fast, but it is accomplished by stacking, which you can do with AMD as well, so, AMD is still better. And then you have overclocking which in the past you would kill an Intel if you did that while AMD has handled it with no problem.
I have friends who build computers and none have used Intel for over 5 years and refuse to. They are who got me to try AMD and have used the AMD cpu ever since.
By the way, AMD did not copy Intel. They were the ones who came up with the idea of hyper threading and dual core technology. That is a fact, not opinion. An AMD cpu does run a little hot and needs a bigger cooling fan because they use more power and put out more power, duh. It has nothing to do with AMD copying Intel. That is a bogus accusation that someone made earlier. As far as cleaning, ALL pc's need to be cleaned of dust and maintained. By the way, I have seen way more Intels burn out than AMD. In fact I have never seen an AMD burn out. The only thing I have seen burn out is a cheap vid card made by ATI Radeon I will never by their crap again. NVidia is the way to go.

Ones made by Intel, the other is made by AMD! I use only AMD chips in the PCs I build due to the fact that they are cheaper in price and I havent had a single AMD failure in the 8 years since I switched They perform just as well as Intel!
To Batako, I have built hundreds of systems for other users! Once they leave the shop, I dont control how they are operated! I have yet to see one solitary piece of software that didnt run well on an AMD either!

Intel and AMD are different processor-making companies.

Intel's processors tend to be faster (they "have more herz", you might say). The stronger processors are the Pentium and the new Core-Duo series. Their weaker processor is the Celeron (stay away from the Celery processors!!)

AMD's processors aren't necessarily as fast as Intel, but they work harder. So don't think they're worse because they "have less herz". Their stronger processor is the Athlon series, their weaker is the Duron and Sempron series.

In the past, people have said that AMD was more suited for gaming and multi-tasking, whereas Intel was more suited for graphic/video editing.

I don't know how those perspectives have changed as I really stopped paying attention to the processors a while ago.
