I think that you are asking about how to find melting points. Put the solid in the test tube, stick the thermometer in the solid, and heat. As soon as you see the crystals turn to liquid, stop heating and read the temperature. You can do the same in reverse, of course. let the liquid cool down, and note the temperature at which the liquid solidifies. The two temperatures should be the same.
