It's interesting that they race against each other far more than against 'everything that moves'; those races are ususally non-serious publicity stunts.
So there must be something about comparing your skills and abilities against very similar skills and abilities. Something about the excitement of not knowing the outcome.
It probably dates back to being the first to the 'kill', or maybe the first to get away from the lion's jaws. Both of which have their rewards.
It's also interesting that, when you think about it, most people don't do it. They often pay to watch people doing it for money.
Most people do compete in some way, though; it's considered uncouth nowadays, I suppose.

Simply a need to be competitive.

We used to compete with each other for game animals and naturally occurring fruits as vegetables. We don't have to do that anymore so we find other ways to compete. Some find it in their work, some build better mouse traps and some navigate a race track as fast as they can.

That competitive urge is encoded on our genes. It is part of our DNA. In today's world it may be vestigial but then again maybe it is something we should hold on to.

The need to get there first. No one likes to be last. I know I don't.
In the office when there are three people up for a promotion, there are going to fight for that job and start kissing butt.
People get angry and emotional when that "race" becomes personal.

If you are referring to 'the rat race' than God only knows how we reached the pace of life we have, (the speed of technology probably has a lot to do with it - mustn't be beat by a computer etc). If you are referring to stuff like the Olympics, i guess we do it because we can.
