That's a great question! I would think that the power of speech would be the greatest way to communicate. This is because it is the most simplest form without the need of wires, batteries, etc. . Too many things out there today run on wires and electricity that help us communicate. Word of mouth is an effective sales technique. It's simple and there isn't any charge.

The Internet if they were to use it properly. The phone companies are fighting this with everything they have. It could put them out of business. Anyone can call and talk over their computer just as a phone call. The technology is there for phone hookups to your PC for private long distance calls anywhere in the world and it would cost nothing. Once they figure out how to charge someone for this they will develop it and sell the system. No doubt they will charge by the minutes like the companies now, even though there is no cost to them. If you and your friend have the software now you can use it for free. I don't know how long that will last though.

I believe the Internet has to be considered the greatest modern aid to mass communication....it enables us to get our ideas out to others all across the world via e-mail, websites, advertising, etc., and is readily accessible to the majority of people. Those who do not have Internet access in their homes are able to connect via computers in libraries, internet cafes, schools & universities. In most cases, such access is free (or available for a token fee).

Invention?

Hmm ... probably the stick, for writing in the mud.
That is ... writing. The idea of saving our communication
for later use is crucial to all levels of humanity and is
the basis, really of all recorded history and science.

If you're looking for something more modern, the
printing press, the telephone and yes, the computer.

great question! if you are thinking about a device or machine, then most experts would probably say the printing press, because it gave access to knowledge for people of all social classes, and with access to knowledge comes freedom and individual liberty.

for example, it was no accident that the first printed book was the bible. until the printing press, the catholic church controlled almost all books. but, with the printing press, all kinds of knowledge could be spread quickly from place to place.

one more thing -- with printed books, we can store knowledge for the use of new generations. this was hardly possible before gutenberg.

good luck!

In Communication, I think philbert has the answer - women.

The greatest ever Discovery, on the other hand, is that which Denis Towers has recently achieved:
Scientific evidence of the real story of Adam and Eve.
That has to be the 'greatest ever' discovery.

I think you can get his book now via amazon.com.
I have a copy myself: It is called, "TWO BIRDS ... ONE STONE!!", as it also disproves evolution.

The wire for the telegraph. Prior to that it was pony express and a sailing ship.
A little over a hundred years ago, it took months for news to travel around the world.
Great question.

Paper.

People have been using different types of paper for millenia, with all sorts of writing tools, and guess what? We still use it today. It's like the wheel, it's one of those enduring inventions.
