In my opinion, aviation. Travel by boat is limited to areas that are accessable by a body of water. The same applys for automobiles and roads. But aviation allows people to reach virtually any place in the world in a matter of hours. Before, a sea voyage accross the world would take months, now it can be done in a day. Getting things like supplies, mail and other materials to people takes far, far less time.
